Tilting and Toxicity in League of Legends

This study by Oskar Dürfeld (Faculty of Psychology and Sport Science, University of Innsbruck) looks at how League of Legends players feel, behave and communicate in the game — especially around tilt and toxicity. You were invited because League of Legends is your most played game (played for more than a year), your main account is on the EUW server and you are at least 16 years old.

  • Takes about 10–15 minutes.
  • Participation is voluntary: you may skip any question and stop at any time by closing the browser — with no disadvantage to you.
  • There are no risks beyond those of a normal online survey.
  • Your answers are stored anonymously (a random ID, no name or address).
  • We never ask for your login or account details, and we do not fetch any data from your game account.
  • Gamer profile: at the end you will see a personal summary of your own answers (your motives, how you handle tilt/toxicity, and a gaming-involvement indicator). It is shown only to you, for your interest, and is not a diagnosis.
  • Optional raffle: win 1×50 € or 5×10 € Riot Points. The e-mail for this is entered in a separate form at the end and can never be linked to your answers.

Lawfulness of processing. Your personal data are processed for this research on the basis of your consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR. Some questions concern emotions; these special categories of personal data are processed on the basis of your consent under Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR.

What data are collected. The questionnaire does not ask for your name or postal address; your answers are stored under a random ID. If you enter the raffle, your e-mail address is collected in a separate form, stored separately from your answers, used only to contact winners and — if you opt in there — to send you the study results, not linked back to your responses, and deleted once the prizes have been sent and any requested results have been shared.

Storage & retention. Your data are stored on secure servers of the University of Innsbruck and may be kept for up to 10 years for scientific purposes in line with good scientific practice. The archiving of the data (without publication of the raw data) is carried out in the public interest under Art. 5(1)(b), Art. 89, Art. 6(1)(e) and Art. 9(2)(j) GDPR in conjunction with § 7 (1) no. 2 DSG. Results are reported only in anonymized and aggregated form, so individual participants cannot be identified.

Recipients. Your personal data are not passed on to third parties and are not transferred to a third country.

Your rights. You have the right of access (Art. 15), to rectification, erasure or restriction of processing (Art. 16–18), and to data portability and objection (Art. 20–21). No automated decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects concerning you are made (Art. 22 GDPR); the gamer profile is an automatically generated summary shown only to you and is not a decision about you. To exercise your rights, contact the supervisor, Hannah Strauss (Hannah.Strauss@uibk.ac.at). You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority (Barichgasse 40-42, 1030 Vienna, phone +43 1 52 152 0, dsb@dsb.gv.at) (Art. 13(2)(d) GDPR).

Right to withdraw. You may withdraw your consent at any time, without giving reasons, by written notice to the supervisor, Hannah Strauss (Hannah.Strauss@uibk.ac.at). Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal (Art. 7(3) GDPR). Your data can only be deleted while you are still identifiable; once the data have been anonymized, identifying participants — and therefore deleting individual records — is no longer possible (Art. 11 GDPR).
